Moviemov: Italian Cinema Now at Greenbelt 3 from November 9-13, Brillante Mendoza Film Tribute!

The Embassy of Italy, the Film Development Council of the Philippines, the Philippine-Italian Association, in cooperation with Rustan's, The Peninsula Manila, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and in collaboration with Asiatica Film Mediale (organizers of the most important Asian Film Festival in Italy) and Playtown (organizers of the Film Festival in Rome) present Moviemov: Italian Cinema Now at Greenbelt 3 from November 9-13, 2011.

Moviemov is a travelling festival supported by the General Direction for Cinema of the Italian Ministry of Heritage and Culture. It is co-organized by and in collaboration with the Italian Embassies in Bangkok and Manila, as well as Institutional and Private Partners, whose goal is to create a line-up of films and events that will best promote and show in Asia what present-day Italian cinema is all about.

It aims to be like the Rome, Venice or the Cannes International Film Festival, in which the producers, directors, actors, etc. of the films to be shown will actually come to the Philippines. On top of that, there will also be roundtables among the Italian and Filipino filmmakers in order to have an international exchange of ideas and concepts in making films, and to have future collaborations and lasting partnerships together.

Spreading contemporary Italian cinema in Manila is a good opportunity to have new audiences, and more importantly, to have collaborations between the Italian and the Filipino filmmakers, creating films that are made up of an international exchange of ideas.

The organizers of this festival have chosen the free entry to all screenings, workshops and review meetings in order to boost participation among school and university students. A dense and multi-voice dialogue that--as the organizers hope--will become a perpetual cultural event for audiences of so ancient and sophisticated artistic traditions and able to meet the offer of a new generation of writers, actors and producers who bode well for the renewal of Italian cinema.

The film festival will be a grand event, the first of its kind in the Philippines.  It offers an exciting line-up of Italian films, including tributes to the famous Italian horror film director Dario Argento and to great Italian director Bernardo Bertolluci.

Moviemov also features a tribute to award winning Filipino director Brillante Mendoza.  Films to be shown include Bertolluci's Last Tango in ParisThe Last EmperorThe Dreamers  and  The Conformist; Argento's Dracula 3DSuspiria, and  Profondo Rosso (Deep Red);  and Mendoza'sSerbisKinatay and Lola.  Other films in the Italian showcase areMine Vaganti (Loose Cannons)Habemus PapamChe Bella Giornata (What a Beautiful Day), Una Vita TRanquilla (A Quiet Life)Vincere (Victory), Corpo Celeste, and Passione.   The films will be shown free of charge, and with English subtitles.

Two workshops by famous horror-film-director Dario Argento and award-winning composer Franco Piersanti will be conducted as well, and this will definitely draw in hundreds of people, be they students of film or film enthusiasts.

The Moviemov film festival is envisioned to become like the prestigious Venice and Cannes Film Festival.  The opening of Moviemov film festival will be highlighted by the Red Carpet Evening on November 9, 2011 at Greenbelt 5, Fashion Walk.  Important Italian actors, directors and producers such as Dario Argento, Asia Argento, Lina Sastri, Ennio Fantastichini, Gianni Paolucci, Daniele Cipri, Alice Rohrwacher, Camilla Nesbitt, Claudio Cupellini, Carlo Macchitella, Franco Piersanti, and Luciano Sovena will be arriving in the Philippines together with representatives of Asiatic Film Mediale, headed by Senator Goffredo Bettini and Italo Spinelli.

Thus, each year, a specific theme is chosen to be able to concentrate on a particular aspect in the use of the Italian language.

With the exception of the Italian Film Festival Moviemov: Italian Cinema Now, the 11th Edition of the Settimana della lingua Italiana nel mondo is organized by the Embassy of Italy in collaboration with the Department of European Languages, University of the Philippines, Diliman, where there is an Italian Section and students can graduate with a degree in the Italian language.

Aunor is popularly regarded as the Superstar for her stellar achievements and enormous contribution--as actor, singer, TV host, and producer--to the entertainment industry.

Indeed, Nora Aunor is a world-class artist as shown by the list of international organizations that have given her a Best Actress award, including the Cairo Film Festival (The Flor Contemplacion Story, 1995), East Asia Film and Television Festival (Bakit May Kahapon Pa?, 1997), Brussels Festival of Independent Films (Naglalayag, 2004). She was also nominated in the Berlin Film Festival for Himala and awarded the Certificate of Honor in the Cannes Film Festival for Bona.

ITALIAN HITCHCOCK TO BE HONORED. Aside from Nora Aunor, Italian film director, producer and screenwriter Dario Argento will also be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ryan and Judy Ann can relate to their roles in 2011 MMFF entry 'My Househusband'!

Real life couple Ryan Agoncillo and Judy Ann Santos brings more to the table in their much anticipated Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry, My Househusband, than in projects they have topbilled together in the past.

“We’ve been married for two years now so we know exactly what marriage is about unlike in previous films where it was purely acting,” Ryan said. “Plus we’ve had Yohan and Lucho for quite a time so we can truly say we relate to being parents.”

Proudly produced by OctoArts Films, “My Househusband” is a light comedy about husband and wife who have exchanged roles, at least in the traditional sense; that is, Rod stays at and tends to home while Mia earns a living. They deal with various situations in such a set-up.

Ryan points out that the film is no “andres de saya” tweak. “It’s not as if Rod is a ‘yes’ man. He still gets to wear the pants in the family except that he also dons the apron come meal times,” he said.

The cameras have started grinding for “My Househusband.” It is being helmed by the award-winning Jose Javier Reyes with whom Ryan and Juday worked in 2007's "Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo" and 2008’s “Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo.” Both movies were topgrossers in their respective filmfest seasons creating a lot of excitement for this next franchise from the loveable husband and wife tandem and their favorite director. It wouldn’t be a surprise at all if “My Househusband” will emerge as a great contender once again in the 2011 film festival box-office race.

Ryan is especially excited to do this movie because it is a homecoming of sorts for him who actually began his acting career within the OctoArts camp via his role in the 2005 movie “Kutob.” He said, “Masayang masaya ako because Boss Orly Ilacad was the very first producer who trusted me enough to give me a role in a movie. It’s nice to go back to where you started basically. I know we are in good hands here,” he said.

“Direk Joey is a cool guy. It’s very easy to work with him provided that you come to work prepared---which should be the case anyway,” Judy Ann said. “He knows how to strike the balance between maintaining a happy set and keeping everything running with clockwork precision.”

In reading the script of “My Househusband,” Ryan and Judy Ann found themselves empathizing with the lead characters though not necessarily according to gender. “Some of the things that happen to Mia, I myself have gone through in life,” said Ryan.

“And there were instances when I can relate to how Rod reacts to a situation because I feel I would do the same if it were me,” said Judy Ann. The actress notes that Mia is the supportive and patient kind of wife versus the loudmouthed, obnoxious and strong-willed ones she has played before. Ryan, on the other hand, says Rod is a very principled guy and one with a lot of heart.

The pair is confident that more than entertaining the audience, “My Househusband” gives a realistic idea of what a marriage is like. “You realize that the vow about staying together ‘for better or for worse’ is no lip service,” he said.

Judy Ann rejoined: “If anything, we hope the people would leave the audience enlightened that conflicts actually spice up a marriage if handled correctly. These problems can actually make the husband and wife stronger for their family.”

"My Househusband" under OctoArts Films is an entry to this year's Metro Manila Film Festival.

'Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa' Graded A by CEB!

The indie movie Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa was Graded A by Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB)! Rocco Nacino, Paulo Avelino and Jean Garcia top bills the movie.

SYNOPSIS:

Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa explores the intersection and divergence between feminist and gay concerns in the third world context, as it features the poetry of Merlinda Bobis, Ruth Elynia Mabanglo, Joi Barrios, Rebecca Anonuevo, Benilda Santos and Ophelia Dimalanta.

When Marlon, a college student, stalks Karen, his literature professor, he finds out that she moonlights as a choreographer and dance teacher in a dance studio.

Frustrated over his performance in her literature class, he plans to impress her instead by learning to poeticize his body movements and enroll in her dance class. He hires his classmate to teach him the basics of dancing. As Dennis, his tutor, teaches him how his body should move, Marlon begins to understand the intersections between the art of poetry and dance. This opens up his world to new insights about the life of Karen as s single woman who chose to live the life of an artist in a third world setting.

Marlon begins to understand how the poems being discussed by Karen in class are testaments to her choice to stand by her art. Karen eventually finds out, through Dennis, that Marlon only enrolled in her class to be near her. She confronts Marlon about this and wishes that his interest for dance would survive his infatuation for her. Marlon feels betrayed over Dennis telling Karen. But it is also this sense of betrayal that tells him that he has already become close to Dennis, whom he now considers a friend.

Up until then, Marlon and Dennis have become inseparable as they both tackled the complexities of poetry and dance. Sensing the coldness between the two, Karen set them up to help her train a group of dancers for a cotillion dance. Eventually, Karen trains both Marlon and Dennis to star in her dance adaptation of the epic Humadapnon, when she bags a grant. Marlon will play the lead role of Humadapnon, who becomes trapped in a cave full of women. Dennis’ character now has to rescue Marlon from the women, as he plays the role of Sunmasakay, the male incarnation of the goddess Nagmalitong Yawa.

On the eve of their performance, in a drunken conversation, Marlon confronts Karen how he could not understand her poetry. Karen, in response, assures Marlon that he does understand her poetry. His mind is just unwilling to, unlike his body which already understands. Karen invites Marlon to dance with her, but in the middle of her dance, she passes him onto Dennis. Their drunken dance culminates with Marlon and Dennis taking on the roles of Humadapnon and Sunmasakay on stage.
